There are some very special places in South Carolina that allow us to learn first hand about our state and national history. Once numerous, these places have become increasingly rare and if they are destroyed, a tangible part of our culture is lost forever. They are our military sites from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars that stand as eloquent reminders of defining moments in our history and need to be respected for the lessons each can teach us.
Many have been lost due to modern development, insensitive public policy and the lack of legal protection. Others are gone because of indifference, neglect, vandalism and insufficient preservation measures. These losses may be irreversible but they are not inevitable.

Since its formation in 1993, the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust (a 501-c-3 federally tax exempt, non-profit organization) has been working with private citizens, developers, institutions and communities to ensure the continued existence of these important cultural resources. Properties are protected and maintained by the Trust through preservation easements and title transfers. The Trust is not only the protector of many of our historic military sites but also provides educational programming, site interpretation and living history demonstrations for our schools and the public.

Please JOIN US by becoming a member of the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust and gain the satisfaction of knowing you play an active role in preserving and protecting our state’s history and military heritage.
